American Experience: The Rise and Fall of Penn Station

In 1910, the Pennsylvania Railroad, led by the company's president, Alexander Cassatt, successfully accomplished the enormous engineering feat of building tunnels under New York City's Hudson and East Rivers, connecting the railroad to New York and eventually, via the Hell Gate Bridge, to New England, knitting together the entire eastern half of the United States. The tunnels terminated in what was one of the greatest architectural achievements of its time, Pennsylvania Station. Designed by renowned architect Charles McKim, and inspired by the Roman baths of Caracalla, Pennsylvania Station covered nearly eight acres, extended two city blocks, and housed one of the largest public spaces in the world. Neither Cassatt nor McKim lived to see their masterpiece completed, but many of the one hundred thousand attendees of Penn Station's grand opening proclaimed it to be one of the wonders of the world. But just fifty-three years after the station's opening, the unthinkable happened. What was supposed to last forever, to herald and represent the American Empire, was slated to be destroyed. The financially-strapped Pennsylvania Railroad announced it had sold the air rights above Penn Station, and would tear down what had once been its crowning jewel to build Madison Square Garden, a high rise office building and sports complex. On the rainy morning of October 28, 1963, the demolition began; it took three years to dismantle Alexander Cassatt's monumental station. In the wake of the destruction of Penn Station, New York City established the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Grand Central Terminal, designated a historic landmark in 1967, was spared a similar fate.

Fine Chronicle of a Great Building

This documentary is a fine history of what was perhaps the finest piece of public architecture created in the United States, and its destruction.

I just love this building. Design MC Kim, Mead and White. I will never forgot when I when to the N.Y. Worlds Fair in 1964 and got off the train and look up and saw the sky and when to a ticket window and asked the lady and said,Whats going on to this building and she said they are throwing it down. I cryed. I also build a model of Penn Station out of paper for my train layout. But my dog when to the bathroom on it. A great DVD to see. I burn a copy for me and gave this DVD to the Darby Library for others to see. Richard Reynolds

Penn Station as I remember it
Review by Djt C. on 07/17/20 review stating Penn Station as I remember it
This was a great show about the construction of Penn Station and how the tunnels under the rivers were constructed. I really admired the courage of the tunnel workers. What a shame that it was dismantled to build Madison Square Garden. I am glad they left the train stations. I commuted to the city from the north shore of Long Island and know Penn station very well. I was ten years old as I walked with my parents. I would love to go back again and to observe the surroundings. Sad to allow to be destroyed.

Excellent Documentary

A fascinating history of the rise ... and sadly ... the fall of Penn Station. Losing it has kept other landmarks from being demolished, but its tragic that this outstandingly beautiful structure fell to the wrecking ball.
